Boundaries
Summerhill’s boundaries are St.Clair to the north, the CN railway tracks to the south, Avenue Rd. to the west and Mt. Pleasant to the east.
History
In 1842, a local millionaire who made his fortune in transportation built a beautiful villa in the regency architectural style on a small hill, he named it Summerhill. This two hundred acre estate traversed all the way from Yonge Street to Mt. Pleasant Road. Then in the 1860s the area was subdivided and sold off. This led to significant changes and a great amount of development.
In the 1920s Summerhill became the main railway station for Toronto. It became a very important hub for the Canadian Pacific Railway. It enjoyed being an important stopover and communing point contributing to the growth of the region. It then fell into obscurity once the station was closed. In 1965, the City decided to make it into a subway station, which helped the area regain some of its prominence.
This station still stands and is a major landmark for the area. The old station is now arguably the most beautiful LCBO in Ontario. The old bridge that also remains just north of the station adds to the rustic charm.
Neighbourhood Characteristics
Summerhill is a wonderful area to live in. It is a quiet neighborhood despite is close proximity to downtown. The tree lined avenues and the calm atmosphere make it quite coveted.
