Hoggs Hollow stretches south from York Mills Road to Rosedale Golf Course and east from Yonge Street to Highland Crescent.
History
The neighbourhood acquired its name from its first inhabitant, Joseph Hogg. He settled the area is 1824 and built a grist mill and a whisky distillery. He was in fact, one of the first established millers in the region.
After the demise of James Hogg, his sons William and John separated the property and it was henceforth known as Hoggs Hollow. A large part of the landscape of this region was covered by marshes and damp areas. The region was sparsely inhabited as no construction could take place as a result of the damp grounds. It was located near the York Mills village. The population of this region largely comprised of Englishmen, Scotts and Irishmen.
The foundation of this neighbourhood, as we see it today, was laid in the 1920’s. Roads and houses were constructed that resembled a picturesque English landscape. The area developed gradually, construction was pretty well finished by the 1960s.
Neighbourhood Characteristics
This neighbourhood is set against the backdrop of the scenic Don River valley and is a fascinating place to be in. Its architecture reflects a touch of Colonial, Modernist, Georgian and Tudor influences. There are both ordinary houses as well as condominiums in the area. It is in fact a posh area in Toronto with much of its prestige owing to the fact that it is a wonderful retreat with a beautiful landscape.
